Analysis and Assessment Groups

Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG)
MEPAG is responsible for providing science input needed to plan and prioritize Mars exploration activities, and serves as a community-based, interdisciplinary forum for inquiry and analysis in support of Mars exploration objectives.

Lunar Exploration Analysis Group (LEAG)
LEAG was established in 2004 to support NASA in providing analysis of scientific, technical, commercial, and operational issues in support of lunar exploration objectives and their implications for lunar architecture planning and activity prioritization.

Outer Planets Assessment Group (OPAG)
OPAG is NASA's community-based forum designed to provide science input for planning and prioritizing outer planet exploration activities for the next several decades.

Venus Exploration Analysis Group (VEXAG)
VEXAG is NASA's community-based forum designed to provide scientific input and technology development plans for planning and prioritizing the exploration of Venus over the next several decades, including a Venus surface sample return mission.

Small Bodies Assessment Group (SBAG)
SBAG was established by NASA in March 2008 to identify scientific priorities and opportunities for the exploration of asteroids, comets, interplanetary dust, small satellites, and transneptunian objects (TNOs).

Curation and Analysis Planning Team for Extraterrestrial Materials (CAPTEM)
CAPTEM serves two functions: (1) It is a community-based, interdisciplinary forum for discussion and analysis of matters concerning the collection and curation of extraterrestrial samples, including planning future sample return missions; and (2) it is a standing review panel, charged with evaluating proposals requesting allocation of all extraterrestrial samples contained in NASA collections.

Mapping and Planetary Spatial Infrastructure Team (MAPSIT)
MAPSIT was established by NASA and the planetary science community in the fall of 2014, following recommendations from the Planetary Science Subcommittee of the Science Committee of the NASA Advisory council. Originally named the Cartography Research Assessment Group (CRAG), the MASPSIT name was adopted in the fall of 2015 to be more inclusive of all aspects of spatial data analysis and associated infrastructure.

Astrophysics Investments for Planetary Science
NASA's Astrophysics Missions are available for the use of the entire science community to advance important science objectives independent of which NASA Division manages the programs.

Ice Giants Mission Planning
This group provides a forum to present the current state of knowledge of the ice giant atmospheres, satellites, rings, magnetospheres, and interiors, identifying science priorities, and providing traceability to future missions.

Meteorite Working Group (MWG) 
The curation and collection of Antarctic meteorites is a U.S.-funded, cooperative effort among NASA, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Smithsonian Institution, and the primary purpose of the MWG is to encourage and expedite the scientific utilization of Antarctic meteorite samples.

NASA's Planetary Science Division (PSD) is evolving how it deals with funded facilities. As part of this activity, NASA is working to identify current facilities, how they are working, and the extent to which they serve the science needs of the broader planetary community.

NASA Planetary Science Subcommittee Notes (PSS)
The Planetary Science Subcommittee of the NASA Advisory Council (NAC) reports to the Science Committee of the NAC. Regular meetings are held for the purpose of soliciting from the scientific community and other persons scientific and technical information relevant to program planning. Presentations from the Subcommittee meetings will be posted on this unofficial site.
